In its fledgling year, the West Country extravaganza that is the Bristol Balloon Fiesta comprised just 27 balloons. As more companies began to get involved in the unique spectacle, including entries from across the globe, the number rose to 90 in 1985, a postwar record. This year, 2017, more than 130 hot air balloons took to the gleaming August sky. Among them was our very own Red Letter Days vessel, its iconic red and white design standing out against the ether. After the success of the first Red Letter Days bloggers’ event in February at Cake Boy, we couldn’t wait to create another. This time we elected to up the adrenaline and swap icing sugar for gravity-defying stunts. We chose iFly in Milton Keynes, where a specially selected gang of bloggers and their guests made their indoor skydiving debuts.
Invented in the 1960’s, the hovercraft is the ultimate all-terrain vehicle, capable of taking on off-road mud and grass and then gliding effortlessly onto water. More and more people are getting excited about the idea of piloting a futuristic-looking vehicle that doesn’t technically fly or drive, and we’re definitely among them! Despite their use in mainstream travel (those who prefer not to take the ferry can take a speedy hovercraft to various isles from the mainland), most people don’t know much about hovercrafts. This year marks the 76th anniversary of The Battle of Britain, one of the most pivotal and momentous moments in our nation’s history and today, the 15th September, marks the anniversary of Battle of Britain Day. This extraordinary event is significant for many reasons, and may well be the last time the 21 surviving veterans are able to commemorate.
